“I Left My Heart in San Francisco” was written in the fall of 1953 by George Cory (lyrics by Douglass Cross) about two amateur writers nostalgic for San Francisco after moving to New York.
“The loveliness of Paris seems somehow sadly gray
The glory that was Rome is of another day
I’ve been terribly alone and forgotten in Manhattan
I’m going home to my city by the Bay
High on a hill, it calls to me
To be where little cable cars climb halfway to the stars
The morning fog may chill the air, I don’t care
Above the blue and windy sea
When I come home to you, San Francisco
Your golden sun will shine for me.”
