Last spring, my dear friend Stephanie and I ventured out to the sleepy yet very beautiful Saint Emilion, in the southwest of France. Our reason for the adventure? To track down an old winemaker she had encountered nearly ten years earlier… all because she wanted to thank him.
We had no idea what to expect but we left that morning excited for the possibilities. Hence, the giddy looks on our faces. The highly anticipated outcome? Well, we didn’t find him.
Instead we wandered the streets– speaking broken French, knocking on empty shop doors, and shielding ourselves from torrential downpour. We also consumed some of the region’s most delicious wine and cheese, enjoyed wonderfully deep conversation, and laughed until we cried. It was perfect.
I wonder though– if we would’ve made the trip if we had known the outcome. I want to say yes, but the truth is I don’t know.
